A sheepsfoot roller is a compacting machine used for compressing soils, and is used mainly in the laying of foundations and on dam construction sites. The sheepsfoot roller is mostly used to compact hard or sticky soils such as clays, or to break weak bedrock. The sheepsfoot roller presses the soil rather than crushes it and the knobs help stop the sticky soils from sticking to the entire roller. The roller has a number of knobs which help compact the soil, meaning that sheepsfoot rollers are typically used at dam construction sites where the knobs help knead and compress the soil.

Sheepsfoot rollers are used all over the world as they perform a vital task in the construction industry and are necessary in most construction sites that have sticky and hard soil. There are a number of brands that manufacture sheepsfoot rollers, with Caterpillar, Dynapac, Bomag, Vibromax and Ingersoll Rand being some of the largest and most popular. The most common brands found on the US market are Caterpillar, Dynapac and Bomag, with a couple of other brand models being sold as well. The European market is far more diverse, with a number of smaller brands also represented, such as Hamm, Rammax, Volvo and Wacker. Caterpillar and Bomag seem to be the dominant brands all over the world though, and offer the largest range of rollers specific to a wide variety of needs.
